Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and others joined forces Tuesday to form a new global inkjet manufacturing company, which will be run by Microsoft and HP, the companies announced.
The inkjet company, Inkjet Systems, will focus on the printing and printing-related services needed by companies like Google and Facebook, the two companies said in a joint statement.
“Microsoft and HP have been working together on the technology for the inkjet for more than a decade,” HP said in the statement.
The companies have long been on a mission to create a scalable inkjet-based technology that could allow a range of industries to produce inkjet media and other consumer goods without having to build new equipment.
Inkjet systems are generally used for the printing of printed documents.
They can also be used for high-volume manufacturing of large quantities of ink.
The new company, based in Cambridge, Mass., will produce ink at HP and Lenovo’s facilities.
The three companies have previously collaborated on inkjet systems in China and India.
Microsoft’s new Inkjet Solutions division will focus its efforts on the ink jet manufacturing industry, according to the statement released by Microsoft.
“We are very excited about working with Microsoft and our Inkjet Services partners,” Microsoft COO Craig Mundie said in an email.
“Together we will be building a new generation of inkjet printers for the global consumer market.”
HP is already a partner with Microsoft in the manufacturing of ink for products such as printers, scanners, and notebooks.
The company’s Inkjet printing products have been in production since 2011, and the company is the world’s largest manufacturer of ink-jet printers.
Microsoft is also expanding its inkjet production operations in India.
The two companies announced the formation of Inkjet Media Systems last year.
In February, Microsoft announced it was acquiring Inkjet Technologies for $3.4 billion, which includes an 8% stake in the company.
Microsoft has been a major player in the ink industry for several years.
It has been the main supplier of ink, and its printers have been used by companies from Apple to Facebook to Google.
